Anne J. Rysdale Architect & Associates

Distinctive Plans for Western Homes

Purchased at the estate sale of Art Rader, who worked for the Lusk Corporation and was the original architect of the Indian Ridge development, was some of his tools along with a book titled "Stock Plans" which contains over 200 original blueprints of "Distinctive Plans for Western Homes" designed by Anne J. Rysdale.

From 1949 until the early 1960's, she was the only registered female architect practicing in the state of Arizona

The entire contents of this book has been posted on this website so that homes throughout Tucson can be researched against the blueprints and then attributed to her design.  We have most of the Lusk floorplans for homes in Indian Ridge.

In 1949 Anne Rysdale passed the test to become a registered architect in Arizona.  For the first few years she worked for Tucson's Architect Art Brown.  She later opened her own firm the Rysdale Architect & Associates Inc. at 22 N. Tucson Blvd. in Tucson designing both residential and commercial properties.

At the height of her career Rysdale's Architectual firm also had offices in Tempe, Globe and Albuquerque with over one hundred employees including twenty draftsmen.  She did a number of commercial buildings not only in Arizona but also in Texas and California before moving to Florida in the 1980's.

This book of stock plans was the bread and butter of her practice.  They were distinctive plans from a registered architect but available for a more reasonable cost than having her design a custom home.  Being a female she was known to listen to the wives when designing a home by adding elements that a man might not have thought of not only in the kitchen but throughout the residence including extra closets.

Since one of Art Rader's "tools" was an original book of her stock plans, at some point in his career he must have worked for Anne Rysdale most likely as a draftsman before working for the Lusk Corporation.  Next in Rader's career he worked for Fred Bisbee and designed the homes in Rolling Hills.  But, the similarities in their mid century modern designs strongly suggest that he was influenced by this very skilled female architect.
